Truly, Jay's motorcycle adventure is an offshoot of Carol's invovement in the film studies program of Ga Tech's. Andy, our youngest, participated in the inaugural edition of the program 5 years ago and Carol and I visited it 3 years ago while on vacation in Romania and Italy. When she announced that she would be one of the faculty this year and subsequently I joined the ranks of the under - er, independently employed, it was possible for me to join her here in Gorizia for the month of June. Now, flash back to 2007 when we passed through here on the way to and from Florence and Rome, and share my pain at driving right past the Mugello racetrack in early June, precisely the day of the Italian MotoGP Gran Prix motorcycle race while on our way to a date with her colleagues to tour Venice. In my agony at the missed opportunity, I swore that if we ever came back t Italy in June, I would not miss the opportunity to see a big time Euro roadrace. So Jay's motorcycle adventure will actually begin this Sunday when I join my pals, Josh and Hank (similarly wizened old motorcycle buzzards) as we go to the race in Mugello.
In the meantime, though, I'm enjoying a wonderful time with Carol and the Tech gang in the cute and very laid back small city of Gorrizia. Gorizia foe the uninitiated in up in the extreme Northwest corner of Italy, right on the Slovenia border, so it combines the food, drink and sociability of Italy with a bit of the topography and climate of Austria or Germany. Deeelightful!
We've already had opportunity to also visit the provincial capital, Udine, and enjoy an afternnon's walk into Slovenia (without the slightest impediment or even recognition at the border crossing, its the EU, after all). Next is Venice for a day tour with the group and then I leave on to Milan to hook up with the biker gang.
